- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13But if you need to beat a guy to death on the new york subway with your mp3 player....you want a mini on your hip, not a nano on your neck...
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11hate how people think the mini is more durable than the nano, it has a harddrive in it!! Harddrives die from one drop, they do not last forever. UNLIKE FLASH MEMORY!
- Coopjust, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8A lot of my friends want the minis because you can beat the crap out of them and they take the abuse like it's nothing. This will be great news for them!
- Lou3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If we play this game, I had a 1G that was amazing. Most people can't even imagine a actual moving part on an iPod. Then the obsession continued as I or my wife has had one of every generation following.
- erthian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I just got the new 60gig video, but up till then I used my 20gb 3rg gen. While the video is cool, the 3G just felt allot more solid and I wasn't as worried about getting any little scratches on it... yea, the video is cool, but for me simple is better.
- antoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yes! Those awesome red backlight buttons on the 3G iPods are the best eye candy on an iPod ever! :D
- Stymyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's a difference between "operational durability" and "cosmetic durability". The Mini feels more solid than the Nano in the hand, and it doesn't show scratches as obviously as the Nano, making the Mini more cosmetically durable. For operational durability, meaning the ability to withstand shock (being dropped, etc), it would stand to reason that the Nano (with its flash memory and NO moving parts) should, in theory, be more "durable" than the Mini (with its hard drive).
As far as the "girly" colors of the Mini? Don't 'cha think that's why they made one in silver? - ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6David, what are you smoking? The 3G iPod was bt far the best looking iPod ever. I mean yes, it couldn't play video or have a color screen, but those buttons with the erotic red tinge were awesome. Plus IMO, it marked a time when Apple were at their peak in terms of iPod, (as mentioned further up) they were around before iPod went all mainstream and they came in the best packaging, with the best accessories.
Hell, I have a shuffle, nano and 5G iPod and still bought a 3G off a guy i know for this very reason. - jdmce2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gee, thanks guys, with all the enthusiasm being expressed I couldn't resist yet another impulse buy.
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9they should just make a nano in a mini shell
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You bought a shuffle? Why =^(
- 0gre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm trying to figure out why this is "News" Apple has had the mini refurbs on and off in their refurb area for some time. They also have other older iPods, PPC Mac Mini's, 17" PPC iMacs and other items which they no longer sell up there.
- norick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People love the minis because they have color, that's all.
And the women love the minis. - jay42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree with those who don't understand all this "The mini is way more durable than the nano" talk. Sure, the mini might remain aesthetically prettier after a few months while the nano has a couple superficial scratches, but anyone who has jogged with, dropped, or seen the disk check screen on a HD iPod knows that flash memory is better for a music player. It's only a matter of time until flash reaches conventional HD capacities and replace spinning drives.
EDIT: Did not mean to reply, is there a way to post a regular message if you misclick the reply button? - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I had the 1st gen the day before it was released. I also saw an early prototype. I win this round, Apple geeks! :D.
- vanlandw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5the iPod minis' are a perfect size and perfect for heavy use. the nano seems likeit's going to fall apart where as the mini was built more like a tank.
- lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ jay,,,,,,,,yea, when you press reply by accident, there's a little prompt above the comment box that let's you cancel the reply, or you could just refresh the page and start over
neways, i never really enjoyed the iPod line, but i thot the mini was pretty good and yes it does take a beating....but it's pretty cheap, with the 2G for $159, and i prolly dont need anything over 5GB so this pretty much suits me well...hehe.. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple will have to do better than $150 for me to consider it...
- Legato, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4my 3g came with a dock, a case, a cable and wall power adapter... yeah, it owned
- madcrasher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22nd gen iPod mini charges over USB 2.0. And I think it's still firewire compatable... correct me if I'm wrong.
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I got the 30 GB 3rd Generation iPod almost 3 years ago, and I too was the first person in my school to get it (maybe even my whole town). Like most early-adopters, you were probably all laughed at and told it was a HUGE waste of money (especially me! cost me $800 CDN at the time, but a ton of accessories came with it). Then, slowly, another person got one. Then 2 other people after a year and a half. I made a note of counting how many people in my school had an iPod.
Then just before/after Christmas 2004, MANY people got them at the same time. It was amazing how exponential the growth was.
Not trying to spread Apple Propaganda here, but I was also the first person to buy a Mac in my school willingly. Now the same thing is starting to happen... - abates1337, on 04/03/2009, -0/+1The apple store is down, and its being updated!! Maybe they are "accidentally" adding something new!
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After that Fry's $159 computer article, it took me about four reads to not see "Apple bring back the Mac mini for $149 [refurbished]".
- tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've had my mini for a long time and it still works like the day I got it, other than the battery running down a bit. But even then, it still holds a charge great and if I really wanted to I can send it in for a replacement battery.
Overall, minis are my favorite of the lot. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What... no GOLD mini?? :'-(
- tiuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a gold mini. I had won it, and didn't have an option of choosing the color. Ugly as sin, I sold it a few months later.
I think they should bring back the indestructable aluminum casing and good screen that the mini had for all ipods, though. - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So in other words they should make a Nano?
- twitndiggfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ever since they came out with the nano (September 7, 2005), Apple has been selling these in their refurb section! I'm just waitin until they get some new intel macs in the refurb section.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4so true. the durability of flash with the durability of the iPod mini! it couldn't fail.
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Said before, I'll say it again: The mini was the single best product ever to come out of Apple, and it was a huge mistake to discontinue it. They should have figured out a way to *increase* the line using the mini form factor and materials.
- FunkyChicken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ohh no!! No Pink!
The article on iLounge mentions pink, but Apple only lists the silver, blue, and green models in the refurbished section. Ahh shucks. I know that my Mom is still pining over the pink mini. - Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, i actually was just lookin on apple's store and found these yesterday.
to everyone that said Mini are for girls....WTFever! i've seen them all over the Gold Gym i work out at. i want to get one because: its not as big as a regular ipod, not as small as a nano so i'm not worried about breakin it during a workout, and its got more storage than a flash based drive. i used to use a flash based mp3 player, but it didnt have enough storage. i'd hear the same songs over and over again, then have to put different music on it everyday. - xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There's actually a video of the Nano being thrown out of a car and run over by a truck with no internal damage. Eventually the display was toast after the abuse, but the music played on.
- erthian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yea, I totally forgot about that. If you want the accessories that came with the 3G for the 5G, you have to pay over a hundred dollars.
Not to mention that the 4G and 5G click wheel DOES break. Its not really a design flaw, but people manage to break them. I see people bringing them into work all the time (tech support center) with one of the buttons stuck down. The 3G's buttons were so much better looking to me any way... - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The mac mini is still a good product. It's great for people who want an iPod that is affordable for them. Who cares if its a mini, it's still an iPod.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iPod mini's are selling like hotcakes on eBay! They've become an instant classic. (Probably because they don't get scratched up to look like a relic!)
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A 15G _mini_? Until everyone uses lossless audio formats for their music I don't think 15G can be considered mini.
I'm pretty sure tagging a price on that thing is not the biggest problem with it. - vprice509, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ZX81! Oh yeah! My little brother and I used to have one after our grandpa got tired of it...nothing like waiting a half hour for some black n white game (with pixels the size of a pea) to load, praying to the Sears tape recorder gods for no load errors. Ah, the good old days, when the Vic 20 was drool-worthy...
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know one of those Ipod Minis thats getting resold is one of mine. A few days after my girlfriend got me one the headphone jack stopped working. I love my Ipod Mini, there great and the perfect size.
- chicagospur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Mini is far more durable than the Nano and the 5G. It's funny, but everyone I see with a Mini doesn't have a case, but everyone I see with a Nano or a 5G has it in a massive case.
The Nano and 5G are sexy looking, but if you have to wrap them in cotton wool, and you can't see how pretty they are, it defeats the object... - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they've been doing this for quite a while now. sorry to say, but "old news!"
i can still digg it though. ;)
i'd like to get the second gen, just for the battery. i mean, no firewire. sure. although, it doesn't need an ac adapter, because it charges over usb; or am i mistaken? anyway, usb kinda sucks. let's hope it's usb 2.0.
does anybody know if the second gen ipod mini has usb 2.0? - Xenex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Err, no.
The iPod took off in the 'mainstream' with the 3rd-gen release, thanks to the PC-friendly USB 2 support and the iTunes Music Store launch.
Unless you've got a 1st- or 2nd-gen iPod, you completely missed the 'before they were cool' train. - WiBu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7980
Old news again, 02-27-2006, only 12 days behind. - antoni, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Correct me if im wrong, but doesn't this just mean that Apple are just selling repaired second hand iPod Minis? And if it is, its not that interesting is it?....
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is great news. The thing ive always loved about the mini is the case, its so solid im never worried about dropping it.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Um . . . it's Apple? Since when has Apple offered anything cheap? Okay, so the orriginal Mac mini's were pretty cheap, but still, it doesn't happen that often. And if you remember, when the nano came out and people were trying to rid themselves of their minis on eBay to get a new nano, most of the minis went for much more than they were worth (some were like $50 more).
I agree: the mini was definately the most popular iPod ever offered by Apple. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5my main iPod is a 20GB 4th Gen (iPod w/ Color Display), I have other iPods, but that one really took a beating, and it still works even though it's not very old. Minis are great, they can take beatings and still work too.
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am glad to see the mini back....the mini is in many ways what took the ipod from a purchase ppl couldn't comprehend to something viable... I do wish for its return in some way shap or form. I owned a nano for a period, and found it to be awsome, but in some respects, just too small.
If they took the mini form factor and reintroduced it as a production line, after they slammed it full of flash memory...it would hold a hunge amount of data and possibly cost more than the top of the line 5g's while storing less...and I would consider buying it. (If it had a color screen and could hump video.)
...
Also a 15 gig mini with a hard drive and beefy batery would be nice if it is possible, I assume the biggest stumbling block is where it fits in the pricing....
At any rate, I have owned both a nano and a mini, and I miss both dearly, but despite the color screen I miss my mini more. I never lost it in my pocket....and the included belt clip was excellent. - fredinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1look cooler? i actually prefer the nanos!
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1so do the nanos, but people want those. besides, the minis look cooler, and they're cheaper per gig.
